Student Registration Time

August, 2016

St. Albert has two school systems—public and Catholic—and this means that registering your child for school differs slightly between the two. Here are the basics to keep in mind when registering your child as a new student, as there’s just under a month left before the 2016/17 school year begins. Parents rejoice.

ST. ALBERT PUBLIC SCHOOL

  1. You can register your child all year; however, during July and August, you’ll have to contact the Public District Office. Throughout the school year, just contact the individual school your child will attend. Keep in mind, there’s also early registration in the spring.
  2. If you’re registering your child for kindergarten or Grade 1, you’ll need to bring your child’s birth certificate as proof of age. For kindergartners, he/she needs to be 5 years old before the last day of February, 2017. For first graders, he/she needs to be 6-years-old before the last day of February, 2017.
  3. If you’re registering your teenager for the first time for high school, you’ll need to bring your teen’s last year’s final marks and his/her birth certificate.
  4. You can register your child at a school outside your catchment area, but acceptance will depend on space at that school.
  5. If your child requires special education, you may have to register your child at a school outside your catchment area because not all schools have special-needs programs.
  6. You and your child will need to sign the “Student Acceptable Use of Technology” form. Elementary and high schools have different forms.
  7. All school fees, including text book rentals, are due at the time of registration.

ST. ALBERT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

  1. You can register your child all year; however, during the summer months, you’ll need to contact the Catholic District Office. For schools’ funding and planning purposes, it’s best to register your child in March before the start of the next school year. Throughout the rest of the school year, you can contact the school directly.
  2. You can register your child at a school outside your catchment area, but it’ll depend upon availability at the school.
  3. If your child requires special education, you may have to register at a school outside your catchment area.
  4. For pre-schoolers, kindergartners and students new to the Catholic school system, a copy of government issued ID is required to verify legal name and age. Some of the documents accepted are birth certificates, Treaty Cards (number), valid passport. For a full list of accepted ID, contact the Catholic District Office or school.
  5. Your child will need to sign the “Responsible Use Agreement” in regards to technology if he/she is 18 years or older. You’ll need to sign for your child if he/she is 17 years or younger.
  6. School fees, including text book rentals, are due at the time of registration.
