August, 2016
The 35th annual Edmonton International Fringe Festival will be kicking off this Thursday, and that means that Old Strathcona will be taken over by all things theatre. There will be drama, comedy, improv, musicals and more, and all with ticket prices of $16 or less. If you’ve never been the the Fringe Festival, make 2016 the year that you finally take the plunge.
Though its called the Edmonton Fringe Festival, there will be shows from all over, including St. Albert. Many of our city’s actors, writers and directors will be showing off their creative talents over the ten-day festival, and Fringe is perhaps the best time of year to show support for your neighbours and their creative passions.Of course, part of the fun of Fringe is that not every show is guaranteed to be good. The experimental nature of the festival means that not all shows will meet with critical acclaim. But don’t let that turn you off the festival. Keep an eye on the festival’s online reviews to find out what is worth seeing and what you should avoid.
The best shows will sell out fast though, so get your tickets as soon as you spot a show that catches your interest. You can order tickets online here, from the fringe box office (780-409-1910) or from TIX on the Square (780-420-1757). Or, if you’re feeling brave, you can take a chance and buy tickets in person on the Fringe grounds. You might find that your show has sold out by that point, but when picking a replacement show, there is always the possibility that you’ll stumble across a hidden masterpiece.
Happy Fringing.
