New paint technology means new kitchen cabinets

Want to update your kitchen, the heart of your home? Start by refinishing your cabinets. Even if your cabinets are in good shape, you can give your out-dated cupboards a fresh look with high-end paint in a fashionable colour. The team at Days Painting Supplies have the expertise to help. Matthew Kujala, Days Painting Manager, recommends Advance® Waterborne Interior Alkyd paint to make your painting go a lot smoother.

We all remember oil-based paints. We tolerated the smell because it gave us a beautiful finish to our doors, trim and cabinets. Unfortunately, due to the potential harm to our health, plus the environmental damage, we started using water-based (latex) paints. This paint, however, lacked the durability and effortless professional finish we remember from oil-based paints. Luckily, Benjamin Moore has a line of cabinet paints that take the best features from oil-based (durability, smooth application, slow drying time), and water-based paints (low odour, environmentally friendly, easy clean-up), and combines them with their Advance® Waterborne Interior Alkyd paint. You can choose from the full line of finishes: matte, pearl, semi- and high-gloss, not to mention you can choose to apply it by brush, roller or spray.

If you’ve ever painted cabinets, you know how finicky the job can be to get a professional finish with no visible brush strokes or drips. Because Advance® has a slow drying time, it provides a more forgiving application. When you apply the paint, it “flows” from your brush smoothly and evenly, making the flow-leveling quality of Advance® easier for DIYers and professionals alike to get closer to that “factory finish” perfection. When all is said and done, the low odour won’t drive you from your home, and cleaning the brushes and trays are as easy as filling a sink with soap and water. And what you’re left with is silky-smooth cabinets with legendary durability that will never “yellow” with age.

Tips from The Pros

“Prepping is key. As great as this paint is, if you don’t prep, or you skip a step, you won’t get that professional-style finish,” says Matthew.

  • Remove the doors and hardware; number them with pencil to identify where they go
  • Sand lightly with 120-grit paper for better paint adhesion
  • Use a high-quality primer for better adhesion and smoothness
  • Paint the backs of the doors first and paint from the inside-out. Do the panel first and the styles and rails last.
  • Let the doors cure up to a week before re-installing

The Variations of White

White is no longer just white. You have off-white, cream, cool-whites and so on. Advance®   is available in all the Benjamin Moore colours. Today’s favourites for cabinet renovations are Simply White (OC-117) , White Dove (OC-17), and White Heron (OC-57).
